Pandit Jasraj was one of the world's most prominent Indian classical vocalists. He belonged to the Mewati Gharana. Born in Haryana in 1930, his musical career spanned eight decades. The doyen of Indian classical vocal music, he was a recipient of various prestigious awards and honors including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
Born in a middle-class Brahmin family in the Hisar district of Haryana, Pandit Jasraj came from a musical background. His father Pandit Motiram was a classical singer. Jasraj's elder brother, Pandit Pratap Narayan, was also an accomplished musician. Pandit Jasraj was the uncle of music composer duo Jatin-Lalit, singer-actress Sulakshana Pandit, and actress Vijeta Pandit. His eldest brother was vocalist Pandit Maniram. Jasraj belonged to the Mewati Gharana and was most famous for the traditional performances of khayals which he sang by adding elements of lighter styles, including the thumri. He traveled across the world and gave many notable stage performances that were converted into music albums. He taught music in several countries including the United States and many of his students went on to become famous musicians.
Pandit Jasraj received several national and international awards in his career. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri (1975), Padma Bhushan (1990) and Padma Vibhushan (2000). In September last year, a minor planet, between Mars and Jupiter, was named after him.
